The Common Language was English
We were invited to a local festival by a Japanese friend, and we watched the young men of the town dancing at the local shrine. We met his friends there, too. One family came from the Netherlands. The parents used to live in the area, and the family is traveling around Japan this summer. There was also an Australian-Japanese family that lives in another city in Aichi. The two families have five junior high and high school children between them. The teenagers were a little shy at first, but when we put them together at one table at the restaurant, they had a great time together on their own, away from their parents. I think the parents enjoyed being away from the children, too. We heard a lot of Dutch and Japanese that night, but the common language was English.
