Readers’ Corner: Bowing and Smiling
I was waiting for my friend at a station in Tokyo. We were going sightseeing together. I noticed a group of foreigners standing by me and remembered that people from overseas smile at each other when they make eye contact.　Suddenly two of them bowed to me modestly, so I smiled back. They told me they were from Nigeria and were here on business for two weeks. Bowing is quite difficult, I think. I remembered the time I was studying English in the U.S. Some American classmates asked me how to bow appropriately. I told them to bend the upper body 45 degrees slowly, stay still for a few seconds, and then straighten up a little more quickly. My classmates started practicing bowing to each other in front of me.
