The Sounds of Sumo
Wrestlers fought inside an empty arena for 15 days. No one was watching them from the seats of the Edion Arena. Only the referee and the judges were there. I watched the Osaka tournament on TV. It was quiet. In some ways that was good. For the first time, I could hear everything. I could hear wrestlers throwing salt into the air and hitting their belts with their hands. I could hear them move their feet. I could hear them breathing. I could hear them slam into each other at the beginning of each bout. I could hear them go down at the end of the bout. But I couldn’t hear any cheering.
