Wet Phones
These days many mobile phones are waterproof. Even if you drop a phone in the water, it won’t break. However, people with wet phones want to dry them quickly, and they have been putting their wet phones into a bag of rice. That makes sense. People put rice into salt shakers to keep the salt dry, so the rice should help to dry the phones. However, Apple is telling its customers not to do that. They say that small pieces of rice can get into the phone and damage it. They say that you should wipe off the phone and wait until it dries naturally.
今週のじゃれマガから上記の２つの文をお手本に選びました。
１つ目は、「濡れたスマホを素早く乾かしたい人はスマホをお米の袋に入れたものです」というようなことですね。
前半部分は「スマホを濡らしてしまった人は･･･」というところをwithでいとも簡単に言ってのけています。このwithを真似ない手はありませんね。
２つ目は、アップル社はそれは絶対にやめて下さいと言っている、ということです。
tell 人 to 動詞 はけっこう命令調の言い方を表します。だから命令文を間接話法にする場合にこのtell toが用いられるほどです。
例えば、
The boss said to me ”Finish this by the end of today.”
（上司は「これは今日中に仕上げなさい」といった）
を間接話法でいうと、
The boss told me to finish this by the end of today.
ちなみに、
The clerk said to me ”Please return the key.”
（職員は私に「カギをお返しください」といった）
のようにていねいに頼むならなら、
The clerk asked me to return the key.
こんな風にaskを使います。
つまりアップル社はかなり強めに命令調で言っていることがわかります。
tellとaskの違い上手に使い分けられるようにしましょう。
