Ready-made Food
When I first came to Japan many years ago, there was very little ready-made food. The people I knew cooked all their own food. In the U.S., there was already a lot of frozen or canned food. People didn’t have microwave ovens then, but they had regular ovens and could heat up food easily. Now everyone has a microwave oven, and Japanese supermarkets are looking more like U.S. supermarkets. You can find so many different kinds of ready-made food on the shelves. You don’t have to be a good cook in order to make dinner. When you want to eat, you can buy frozen food or packs of curry and rice and just heat them up in a microwave oven. That’s really convenient, but it isn’t as good as a home-cooked meal.
今週のじゃれマガから上記の文がお手本だと思いました。
訳し方はいろいろですが「日本のスーパーは米国のスーパーのようになりました」ということを言っています。
英語の比較級はとても便利ですが、便利すぎて時に注意が必要です。
この文では、昔の日本は冷食などがなかったけれど今や米国並みにありますというわけです。
more like ～で、〇〇よりも～に似ているということですが、比較の対象は他でもなく昔の日本です。
今の日本のスーパーは昔の日本のスーパーより米国に近い、ということですね。
こういうことはいろいろな英語でいうことができると思いますが、be more like を上手に使ってみたいですね。
