Akiyama Goes to the Major Leagues
Tsutsugo Yoshitomo used to play for the Yokohama DeNA BayStars, and Akiyama Shogo used to play for the Saitama Seibu Lions. At the end of last year, these two batters went to the U.S. to look for a job. In December, Tsutsugo signed a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays, a Major League team in Florida. Then, on January 6, it was announced that Akiyama had signed a three-year contract with the Cincinatti Reds. Akiyama’s signing is particularly interesting because the Cincinatti Reds are the only Major League franchise that has never had an appearance by a player from Japan before.
