・彼は出場するはずだったが･･･was going to…と過去進行形で語られると、「そうではなくなるんだな」と感じますね
・テストの結果陽性だった･･･tested positiveとこんなに簡単に言えるのですね
・人に～してほしくない･･･want 人 to ～ 重宝です
・give upはそのまま目的語をとる時もあれば、give up on目的語という時もあります

How Did He Feel?
Uchimura Kohei, the Olympic gold medal gymnast, must have been shocked. He was going to take part in the 2020 Friendship and Solidarity Competition last weekend, but he tested positive for COVID-19. Then he tested negative. He was able to take part in this competition, but he knows that it will be difficult to hold the Olympics next year. He knows many people in Japan think they cannot be held, but he wants us to understand how the athletes feel. He doesn’t want us to just give up on the Olympics. Instead, we should think about how they can be held.
