Readers’ Corner: He Found a Lucky Marble
My husband and I went to my daughter’s home at the New Year. My 4-year-old grandson and I walked hand in hand to a shrine. After we prayed, he found a flat marble (“ohajiki”) near the torii gate. There was an owl on it. I said to him, “The owl has a special meaning: you won’t have trouble (“fu-kurou”).” He looked happy and put it in his pocket. On the way home, he suddenly took it out and said, ” I’ll give it to you, Grandma.” After that the marble became my treasure. They live far away from us so we hardly ever see them. Now I keep it in a small box and remember them every day.
