なぜ最近しょっちゅう警察官を見るのだろうかと思った筆者、そのわけを思い出しました。
★学びたい英語/まねたい英語（特にお手本と思うところ）
・昨夜はlast nightなのに昨日の朝はlast morningと言わずyesterday morningがふつうです。理屈ではないですね。
・警察官は私に生徒を渡らせてやってほしかった・・・和訳するとややこしくなりますね。英語のまま理解するとなんでもないのに。
・Then I rememberedで始まる文、じゃれマガには珍しくとても長い１文ですね。こんな文を訳して理解しようとしたら大変です。何回行ったり戻ったりしなくてはならないでしょうか。日本語語順に直そうとしないで英語の順序のまま読んで行く習慣を少しずつつけましょう。
・make sure (that)…は便利な英語です。that以下であることを確認するとか、であるように働きかけるという意味があります。特に後者の使い方が便利です。確認すればよいのではなくそのように行動するという部分が。

Making Students Feel Safe
These days when I take the subway, I often see a couple of police officers in the station. Yesterday morning, as I was driving to work, I saw a police officer standing near a high school. He signaled for me to stop because he wanted me to let a student cross the street. I started to wonder why I was seeing so many police officers. Then I remembered that on Jan. 15, the first day of the Common Test for University Admissions, a high school student from Nagoya attacked several people in front of Tokyo University with a knife. There are several high schools and a university in my neighborhood. I think that the police want to make sure that students feel safe when they take entrance exams.
