What’s Cold and Sweet?
When it gets over 30 degrees in summer, I start thinking of cold sweet food. I want ice cream when I’m in the U.S., and when I’m in Japan, I think of shaved ice and “warabi-mochi.” Actually, ice cream and “warabi-mochi” have something in common. They are both sold on the street. I remember a vendor coming to the university where I worked in a small truck. He would park outside during lunch break, and students would line up to buy cold “warabi-mochi.” In the U.S., ice cream trucks would come through the neighborhood, and when the children heard the bell, they came running.
