Readers’ Corner: New Year’s Decorations
I thought about Japanese New Year’s decorations as I read about the time to take down Christmas trees. We burn all the decorations at a nearby shrine around January 15 each year. We call this festival Dondoyaki. It is said that if you warm yourself at the fire, you will be healthy all year. These decorations are used to worship Toshigami, the Year God, so we use new decorations to welcome the god every year. We don’t have a date to take down the decorations, and leaving them up for a while doesn’t bring you a bad luck, but you would be embarrassed because everyone could see them.
