Readers’ Corner: Clownfish and “Kumanomi”
The article about sea horses made me want to find another example. I came up with clownfish, “kumanomi” in Japanese. We can easily guess the reason why it is called clownfish in English. It is more difficult to guess the reason for the Japanese name. When “kumanomi” is written in Chinese characters, “kuma” comes from a type of Kabuki makeup, “kumadori.” An actor makes up his face with red and white paint and draws thick black lines that make each color vivid. The colors of the clownfish also look vivid because of black lines. The word “no” means “of” and “mi” means “a small fish.”
