AI Did It 26 Years Ago!
AI is in the news almost every day, but it is not new. It has been around for many years. In fact, in the late 1980s and the 1990s, there was a computer that played chess. The chess program was called Deep Blue, and it ran on an IBM supercomputer. At that time, the world champion of chess was Garry Kasparov. He was number 1 in the world from 1984 to 2005. Could a computer win any games against such a great player? When Deep Blue tried in 1996, it won 2 games and lost 4. The next year Deep Blue tried again, and on May 11, 1997, the computer finally beat the world champion. The computer won 2 games and got 3 draws. Kasparov only won 1 game. AI did it 26 years ago!
