Happy Birthday, OED!
Today is the birthday of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). The first part of this dictionary was published on February 1, 1884. It was a new type of dictionary. Other dictionaries told you the meanings of words. The OED was different. It was a historical dictionary. It had examples of English going back to the beginning of the English language in the twelfth century. If you want to know where a word comes from or how the meaning has changed over the years, look it up in the OED. The newest edition of the OED has 600,000 words in 20 volumes (books). Do you want to buy the print edition for $1000 or pay $100 per year to use it online?
