Readers’ Corner: Not Cheap After All!
While staying in Birmingham, the U.K., I had a chance to visit Edinburgh. I purchased my train tickets well in advance of the date of the train ride, so I got them cheaper than usual. I got a round-trip ticket (“return ticket” in British English) for 18,000 yen. I enjoyed sightseeing in Edinburgh, and I got on the train to return to Birmingham. After a while, the conductor asked me to show her my ticket. She looked at it and said, “You’ll have to get off at the next station.” I didn’t understand so I asked her the reason. She said, “You’re on the wrong train. This ticket is invalid (you can’t use it).” I got off at the next station and had to spend an extra 17,000 yen to buy a new ticket to get back to Birmingham. It wasn’t cheap after all!
