Sumo Training School
The Grand Sumo May Tournament is taking place now at the Kokugikan in Tokyo. The Kokugikan is also the location of the sumo training school. Young men who want to become sumo wrestlers take a physical examination, and if they pass, they enter the sumo training school here. Students go to this school five days a week. They start the school day with physical training, but they don’t just practice sumo. They study the history of sumo, Japanese history, and sports medicine. They also study calligraphy. According to the NHK report, it takes 6 months for Japanese and 1 year for foreigners to learn the skills that are needed to become a sumo wrestler.
