Rewriting History
My daughter lives in Richmond, Virginia. It was the capital of the South during the Civil War 150 years ago. For more than 100 years, there were statues of the important Southern people from the war along Monument Avenue, a long, wide street in Richmond. For many Southerners, they were heroes, but for black people, these people were not heroes. The South believed in slavery, and black people were slaves until the end of that war. Then, two years ago, after big protests by the Black Lives Matter group, the statues were removed. It seems like Richmond’s history has been rewritten.
