Workers Get 31 Yen More
People must pay their workers a certain amount of money per hour. That is called the minimum wage. A company can pay its workers more than the minimum wage, but it cannot pay them less. The minimum wage is not the same in every prefecture. It is the lowest in Okinawa, Kochi, and Akita, for example, and it is the highest in Tokyo and Kanagawa. The Japanese government has just made a change. As of October 1, each prefecture must raise the minimum wage by 31 yen. The minimum wage in Aichi Prefecture was 955 yen an hour, but now every worker has to get at least 986 yen.
