Looking Back
I was a big fan of Japanese movies when I first came to Japan, but I haven’t seen any old ones recently. Last Saturday, I was looking around a streaming site and found a movie by one of Japan’s most famous directors of the 20th century, Ozu Yasujiro. “Floating Weeds” (“Ukigusa”) is the story of a traveling kabuki troupe (group) that comes to a small town to perform. It is a story of passion and jealousy that takes place during a hot summer. Japan has certainly changed since the 1950s when this movie was made. At that time, everyone smoked like chimneys (smoked a lot), and rice wine (sake) was the only thing that people drank.
