Readers’ Corner: The Japanese Harvest Moons
Did you see “Jugoya,“ the full moon, on September 29? It is also called “Chushu no meigetsu,” the mid-autumn harvest moon. By the way do you know what the moon is called tonight, on October 27? It is “Jusanya,” the waxing moon. On this night, we make offerings of chestnuts, beans, squash, and other harvested crops as well as “dango,” rice dumplings. We give thanks for a good harvest, so the moon tonight is also called “kurimeigetsu,” the chestnut harvest moon, or “mamemeigetsu,” the bean harvest moon. This is similar to Thanksgiving Day in the U.S. I think that the waxing Jusanya moon, which is still not full, feels more Japanese than the perfect circle of a full moon. Take a look at the moon tonight and see for yourself!
