Counting in Japanese and English
Japanese has two ways to say a number: the Japanese way (“hitotsu,” “futatsu,” etc.) and the Chinese way (“ichi,” “ni,” etc.). Foreigners find it difficult to learn when to use these two systems. Another problem for Japanese learners are the special counters. You can’t say “1 pen” in Japanese. You have to use “pon” and say “2 pon no pen.” Usually we can just say 1 plus the world, but there are counters in English, too. We can’t say “a jam.” We have to say “a jar of jam.” Another interesting counter is “head.” We say “a head of cabbage” (or lettuce).
