Who is Coming of Age Day for?
Yesterday was Coming of Age Day. It is a celebration for young people when they become adults. Until this year, people became adults at the age of 20, so the celebration was for 20-year-olds. Last year, however, a new law changed the age of adulthood. People now become adults when they are 18 years old. They can vote in elections, get married, get a credit card, and rent an apartment by themselves. Who are Coming of Age ceremonies for now? It is complicated. Many 18-year-olds are busy studying for university entrance tests so they don’t have time to celebrate and enjoy themselves. Some towns and cities have changed the name of the ceremony to “20-year-old gathering” to keep it for 20-year-olds.
