“They treat a roll of bread as if it were a jewel.” “I felt like a VIP at a department store.” I often hear these comments from people visiting Japan. The high quality of Japanese service is well known. The “omotenashi” spirit is seen everywhere. Nevertheless, there are people who complain about the attitude of the staff toward customers these days. There may be a shortage of employees or not enough time to train them. I remember how much I appreciated that the stores were open when COVID-19 started to spread. I was scared that all the supermarkets and convenience stores would close, but the stores stayed open and are still open now. I do not want to take them for granted.
