“Genius” Retires
Ono Shinji is known as “Genius.” That’s because he is such a talented and intelligent soccer player. He was one of Japan’s first international soccer stars. He began playing professional soccer with the Urawa Reds in 1998, and he was the youngest player on the Japan national team in the same year. He moved to Europe three years later in 2001 and played for the Dutch team Feyenoord. He helped them win the UEFA Cup, a European club competition. He came back to the Reds in Japan, but then he went back to Europe to play in Germany. He also played in Australia. Last Sunday, he played his last professional game with his present team, Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo, against his former team, Urawa.
