The Longest Day of the Year
Today is the summer solstice. It is the longest day of the year for people who live in the northern hemisphere (the northern half of the world). The farther north you live, the longer the daylight. For example, the sun rose at 4:39 a.m. in Nagoya and will set at 7:11 p.m. today. That’s 14 hours and 32 minutes of sunlight. Compare that to Moscow, Russia. Over the weekend I was attending an online conference, and I had a chance to talk to a teacher from Moscow. She said that there is more than 17 and a half hours of daylight now. The sun comes up before 4 a.m. and sets after 9 p.m. That sounds wonderful, but don’t forget that winter in Moscow is the other way around—less than 6 and a half hours of daylight.
