Daylight Saving Time (DST)
In the middle of the night last Sunday, the time changed and Americans had a 25-hour day. Yesterday they were back to a normal 24-hour day, but it got light one hour earlier. Next spring, people will move their clocks forward and have one 23-hour day. Then, for half a year, it will get light one hour later. This is daylight saving time (DST). People do this because the sun comes up before 5 a.m. in summer. They don’t want to get up. If they move their clocks forward, the sun won’t wake them up so early. The sun goes down later too, so they can enjoy the evenings more. Many people also believe that DST saves electricity because people don’t turn on their lights so early. Many countries in Europe have DST, too. Do you think Japan should join them and start DST?
