Two Greats Are Gone
Baseball fans are sad because two great players passed away last week. Sugishita Shigeru was before my time, but I know that he was a legend. He was known as “the God of the forkball.” He won 215 career games and got the Sawamura Award three times. He played for the Chunichi Dragons and helped them win their first Japan Series in 1954. Kitabeppu Manabu was another baseball great who I do remember. He was playing for the Hiroshima Carp when I arrived in Japan. He won the Sawamura Award twice and won 213 career games. He helped Hiroshima win the Japan Series three times.
