Konnyaku + Peas = Shrimp
Shrimp is one of the world’s favorite foods. In fact, it is the most popular seafood in the U.S. Now, for the first time in Japan, a company is going to make plant-based shrimp that you can eat raw. It looks and tastes like shrimp, but it is made from konnyaku and peas. Why are people interested in making plant-based shrimp? Some people have shrimp allergies and cannot eat real shrimp even though they like the taste. They can eat plant-based shrimp, however. There are also people who don’t want to kill and eat living things. They only eat plants, so plant-based shrimp is perfect for them. Finally, more than half the shrimp we eat is farmed these days. Shrimp farming can be bad for mangrove forests, so plant-based shrimp is better for the environment.
