A Holiday in Two Countries
Tomorrow is a holiday in two countries. In Japan, November 23 is Labor Thanksgiving Day. It has been a holiday to celebrate workers since WWII, but the holiday goes back more than 1,000 years. It used to be called “Niiname-sai.” People thanked the gods for the rice harvest and prayed for a good harvest the next year. In the United States, the fourth Thursday of November is called Thanksgiving Day. It goes back 400 years. At that time, the English people in America celebrated the harvest with the native Americans and thanked God for the food that they got from farming and hunting. Today, Thanksgiving Day is a time for families to get together, but they still eat the same food as 400 years ago, turkey and pumpkins.
