Fake News Isn’t New
In August 1835, a New York newspaper called “The Sun” printed some articles about life on the moon. According to the articles, one of the great astronomers of the time, Sir John Herschel, used a very powerful telescope in South Africa to look at the moon. He saw that the moon had oceans and said that many different kinds of animals were living there: goats, unicorns, and bat-like people with wings. The writer wrote the articles because he wanted to make fun of people with strange ideas, but the readers believed his fake news instead. It’s true that Herschel was in South Africa, but he never said anything about finding life on the moon.
