Is Pink a Girls’ Color?
When I was working at an after-school center (“gakudo”) , I had an experience that made a deep impression on me. One day I saw some kids playing with “kendama” which they made by themselves. They made them with two empty pudding cups and used plastic tape to put them together. I found one boy playing with “kendama” which had pink plastic tape on it, and I thought it belonged to a girl, not to him. I asked him whether it was his or not. He told me that it was his. The girl next to him said, “Pink isn’t a girls’ color. He likes pink.” That made me feel ashamed. The girl let me know with those words how much I was caught up in an outdated stereotype.
