The 100th Anniversary of Hachiko
2023 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Hachiko, the dog of Shibuya. Hachiko was born in Odate, in Akita Prefecture. He was adopted by Tokyo University Professor Hidesaburo Ueno in Shibuya in 1924. Unfortunately, Ueno suddenly died in May of 1925. Hachiko moved from place to place but went to Shibuya station every morning and evening to wait for his owner. Hachiko became famous and popular as a loyal dog. He died in 1935 at the age of 11. A statue of him was built but was destroyed during WWII. A new statue was built in 1948. A folk and literary museum in Shibuya has a Hachiko exhibit that attracts many Hachiko fans.
