Do Cicadas Take a Nap?
There is a university campus near my house with a lot of trees. These trees are full of cicadas at this time of year. Cicadas are the probably the noisiest insects in the world, but when I went to the campus to meet another teacher yesterday at 4 p.m., the cicadas were quiet. I asked myself, “Do cicadas take a nap?” I decided to check and found out that at least one kind of cicada, the black cicada (“kumazemi”), takes a rest when it gets really hot. There must be a lot of black cicadas at this university. By the time I left at 6 p.m., it was cooler, and they were making noise again.
