Japan Scores Big at Cannes
Two of the awards at this year’s Cannes Film Festival went to Japanese. Yakusho Koji won the Award for Best Actor for his performance in “Perfect Days,” and Sakamoto Yuji won the Award for Best Screenplay for “Kaibutsu.” I remember seeing Yakusho Koji in the movie, “Shall We Dance?” He was perfect in that role. He has gotten many awards at different film festivals, but this is his first award at Cannes. I didn’t know Sakamoto Yuji, but most screenwriters are not as famous as actors. I do know the director of “Kaibutsu,” Kore-eda Hirokazu. He directed a moving story of a family called “Shoplifters” that won the Palme d’Or, the top prize at Cannes, in 2018.
