その日本語、元は英語かも
英語を知っていくほどに思うことがいろいろあります。
ふだん使っている日本語のことわざや便利な言い回しが「元は英語だったのではないか」と気づくこともその一つです。
「火に油を注ぐ」という言い方も多分そうではないでしょうか。
His excuse just added fuel to the fire.
（彼の言い訳が火に油を注いだ→さらに事態を悪化させてしまった）
fuelは燃料という名詞ですが動詞にも使われます。
上記例文は次のようにも言えます。
His excuse just fueled the fire.
※fuelの発音は一度確認しておきましょう
「この英語、日本語の元になったのかも」と思う英語に出会って密かにニヤっとするのも英語を学ぶ楽しみです。

Back in School at Last!
Japan closed all its schools for three months from March through May last year, but schools have stayed open since then. In New York City, things were very different. The pandemic was terrible there. More than 20,000 New Yorkers died from Covid-19 in March and April last year. The city closed the schools, and everyone had to stay at home. They tried to open the schools again last September, but the pandemic got worse, and most children studied online. Then, the day before yesterday, all the schools in the city reopened. The kids are back in school for the first time in 18 months!
